RIP to White Fragility: How Donald Trump Obliterated the Code of Silence

For years, I’ve studied and presented research on the subtle mechanisms of white supremacy, most notably the phenomenon of white fragility—a psychological defense system that shields white supremacy from scrutiny. Historically, white fragility operated as a code, a sophisticated mechanism to deflect, deny, and dilute discussions about race, preserving systemic oppression under the guise of civility and institutional norms. But in the Trump era, this code has been obliterated.

Donald Trump’s rise to power and his emboldening of far-right ideologies have shattered the fragile pretense of neutrality. The latest example comes from Oklahoma, where the state’s Department of Education launched an “Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism.” The initiative, steeped in Christian nationalist rhetoric, includes school superintendent Ryan Walters praying for Trump with a mug with the words, "Si vis pacem, para bellum." Latin for, "If you want peace, prepare for war.". The message is clear: this is no longer a game of euphemisms. The veil has been lifted. White fragility, as a mechanism to soften the brutal truth of systemic racism, is dead.

From Mary Miller to Oklahoma: The Death Knell of White Fragility
This is not an isolated moment. We’ve seen the slow erosion of white fragility as the far right grows more emboldened. Take, for example, Congresswoman Mary Miller’s chilling declaration after the reversal of Roe v. Wade: “Thank you, Mr. Trump, for this historic victory for WHITE life.” Though her spokesperson attempted damage control, the moment was raw, unfiltered, and telling. It epitomized the shift from covert to overt white supremacy.

Trump’s influence has dismantled the fragile pretense that once demanded white supremacy remain hidden behind polite language. Instead, his rhetoric—amplified by his party and supporters—has encouraged outright defiance of institutional norms, constitutional principles, and even basic human decency. The far right no longer bothers with euphemisms or coded language. Instead, they openly invoke their “God” to pray for dominance, preparing for what they explicitly frame as war.

White Supremacy, Without the Mask
Historically, white fragility served as a buffer, preventing outright confrontation with systemic racism by redirecting attention to individual feelings, intent, or civility. This allowed white supremacy to operate undisturbed under the surface. But with Trump’s rise, the mask has come off. His presidency and ongoing influence have shown that the far right doesn’t care about playing by the rules. They have shattered institutional norms, from attacking voting rights to undermining the separation of church and state.

Oklahoma’s actions represent the latest escalation. The “Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism” blatantly integrates Christian nationalist ideology into public schools, bypassing decades of legal precedent meant to protect secular education. Walters’ promotional video, where he prays for Trump and calls for a Christianized vision of education, is less about faith and more about power. This isn’t about preserving fragility—it’s about flaunting supremacy.

The Implications of White Fragility’s Death
If white fragility is dead, what replaces it? The answer is dangerous: an emboldened, unapologetic form of white supremacy that feels secure enough to abandon euphemisms altogether. When far-right leaders openly call for “Christian patriotism,” mandate religious propaganda in schools, and use prayer as preparation for war, we are witnessing a new phase of systemic racism—one that no longer hides behind pretense.

This reality underscores the urgency of counter-racist efforts. The tools and tactics that once focused on exposing white fragility must now evolve to confront a more brazen and unfiltered manifestation of white supremacy. This means acknowledging that the fight against systemic racism has entered a new phase—one where truth-telling, unflinching accountability, and direct confrontation are more critical than ever.

RIP to White Fragility: A Call to Action
White fragility is dead, but this is not a victory. Instead, it’s a stark warning. The far right’s abandonment of the code of silence signals their belief that their dominance is secure enough to withstand scrutiny. Trump’s impact has normalized overt displays of white supremacy, emboldening movements like Christian nationalism to attack the foundations of democracy and equity.

If we are to counter this new era, we must discard any illusions that systemic racism can be dismantled through appeals to civility or incremental change. The time for euphemisms is over—for both sides. The fight ahead requires clarity, strategy, and an unrelenting commitment to truth.

RIP White Fragility. Now it’s time to prepare for the next battle.
